Nigerian Afrobeats veteran Terry G, whose real name is Gabriel Oche Amanyi, has spoken out about how quickly music legends are forgotten in Nigeria once they’re no longer in the limelight.
The âAkpako Masterâ expressed concern over the tendency of Nigerians to dismiss veteran artists as “irrelevant” or “outdated,” simply because theyâre no longer topping charts. He believes this attitude is damaging and unfair, especially when compared to how legends are treated in other parts of the world.
Sharing his thoughts on X (formerly Twitter), Terry G wrote:
âI hear people say, âYour time has passed!â That mindset is deeply flawed.â
He pointed out that in the West, legends are honored for life. Icons like Jay-Z and BeyoncĂ© are never described as outdated, regardless of how long theyâve been around. Instead, their impact continues to be celebrated.

âIn places like America, once you make a mark, your legacy is protected. But here in Nigeria, weâre quick to forget those who paved the way. Thatâs the same reason many reject their own cultural roots but glorify others,â he added.
Terry G emphasized the importance of continuous growth and relevance, but also stressed that legacy should never be disregarded.
âIf you donât keep evolving, yes, your relevance might fadeâbut that doesnât erase the value of what you contributed. We need to do better in how we treat our legends.â
