Plot & Production

According to the official synopsis, the story follows Mother Mary (Hathaway) as she reconnects with her estranged best friend and former costume designer Sam Anselm (Coel). Their reunion, taking place just before Mary’s comeback concert, forces old emotional wounds to resurface.

Production took place in Germany with funding from Film- und Medienstiftung NRW and the DFFF. The film is produced by David Lowery, Toby Halbrooks, James M. Johnston, Jeanie Igoe, and the Cologne-based Augenschein Filmproduktion team.

Original Music & Soundtrack

One of the film’s biggest highlights is its music.

Daniel Hart composed the score, while Jack Antonoff and Charli XCX created original songs exclusively for the film — a collaboration already generating massive online buzz.

Release Date

Mother Mary is slated for release in theaters in Spring 2026, with more promotional material expected in the coming months.
